Champion of Human Rights

Ark Acton 6th Form students welcomed Amelia Knott to give an inspirational talk on contemporary slavery in the UK and beyond.  The renowned champion of human rights addressed the issue of forced labour in industries such as construction and hospitality. Students were shocked to learn that the government estimates that over 36, 000 people are currently enslaved in the UK. Students now have an understanding of what it means to be modern slaves, the legalisation surrounding slavery and the awful consequences for the individuals suffering. Most importantly Amelia shared with students the role they could play in ending slavery.  Amelia was so impressed by the empathy, curiosity and desire to bring about change demonstrated by our students that she is coming back to Acton to work with students on a national campaign.
